Rhi and Benner at the symphony

Rhi and I love music of all sorts. But one area where we--I particularly--feel like our expertise and experience is lacking is symphonic music. I have been wanting to expand my love and appreciation for it recently, so what a great blessing that one of my bosses just out of the blue offered us a pair of tickets to go see the LA Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The building itself is wonderful, designed by Frank Gehry. Even the escalators up from the parking garage are gorgeous.

Then we got inside the concert hall. We were there to see "Adés Conducts Adés," which means Thomas Adés was conducting some music he wrote. This was the view from our seats:

(We run out of pictures at this point because an usher came up and said we weren't allowed to take pictures. Woops!)

I don't think either of us had ever seen a concert from this POV before, and it was an amazing experience. It was so much fun to hear the sounds and pick out which musician was making them, particularly when--during one piece--there was a lone mandolin player hidden in a sea of violinists. Adés' music is also very percussion heavy and really utilized just about every percussive instrument available. So it was fun to watch the ten percussionists running around the back row, dodging one another, clanging cymbals and bells and tympani.

The music itself was interesting, in a very good way. It was evocative and seemed like it was very much trying to rattle people. Very modern, save for the last piece which was written by an Italian composer in the late-1800's whose name escapes me. It was a wonderful night for us to get away from the couch, and we very much appreciate my boss' generosity.

Holiday party extravaganza...

Last weekend we went to three Christmas parties. (We have pictures from two.) Here's our friend Mick. He's fantastic. You may know him as the voice of Disney's Kung Fu Panda. (That is, the soon-to-be released animated series on Nickelodeon, not the movie. That's Jack Black. Mick is not Jack Black.) He's pretty fancy.

We also went to the annual Rilesly's holiday party. Bo our favorite dog was there, along with some of my favorite Telepictures gals. Here we are sitting pretty:

Lucy, the hostess with the mostest even arranged an appearance by Santa. We couldn't help but snag a shot:

And there you have it!

Christmas time in Benner-fornia

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in our apartment. Rhi and I recently got our tree out and decorated, and it looked so wonderful that we decided to take a nice family photo.

That's us with the kids. But that wasn't enough, Rhi decided we need to have a photo shoot.

Adorable, ain't she? Not to be outdone, I hopped in front of the tree too.

Not as cute as she is, I'll admit.

Fourth of July

Question: What’s the best way to spend Fourth of July

Answer: By stickin’ our freedom and liberty in the face of an Englishman!

That’s right, dear readers, your humble Rhi and Benner spent the birthday of our dear sweet America cozying up to a limey, tea-swilling Redcoat! But really, don’t hold Greg Jong’s citizenship against him. He’s a right good bloke, eh guv’na?

Anyways, the Benners and the Robins spent the holiday grilling at the Jong’s house. It was a low-key sort of night, as Greg and Dani were trying to help their new puppy Ivy June recuperate from illness. (Though things were looking bleak for a while, Ivy is doing quite swell now, and she is just about the cutest, sweetest dog ever.)

Here’s a slideshow from the night, followed by a few notes. Enjoy.

- Isn't Ivy June basically the cutest dog ever?
- Ryan Robins, God bless him, made potentially the worst beer choice ever by picking Michelob Ultra Light Cactus Agave Beer (or whatever it was). Nothing says Freedom and America like a sugary, low-carb, cactus-flavored alcohol.
- We love the Jongs and the Robins a lot.
- Though we heard plenty, we didn't see a single firework go off this year. Personally, I'd like to say I'm bummed, but it's just flashing lights and loud noises.

Benner turns 26!

Oh, but time is a cruel mistress, for alas I, Benner, know the wicked 26th lash of the chronological whip! Woe is me, my age has surpassed what can rightfully be considered young, I am but an old man in waiting!

For shame! For shame!

Sorry. My 26th birthday was on May 24th, and I've had that lament pent up inside me for some time. But even though I have exited the first quarter of my life and am firmly implanted in the next, not all was bad about my birthday.

For instance, my beautiful and wonderful wife Rhianwen (who is still 25, blissfully living within quarter number one, what a whippersnapper!) organized and threw a spectacular celebration for me! She worked so hard to organize and plan the event, decorating everything just the way she knew I'd like it (like stringing up cartoon character Christmas lights, for instance) and even making sure that there would be deviled eggs for consumption (deviled eggs being one of my favorite foods).

Our good friends Greg and Dani Jong were kind enough to let Rhianwen throw the shindig in their backyard (and Dani made the deviled eggs!), where we BBQ'd, beer'd, bocce ball'd and badminton'd the night away with a handful of our closest friends here in LA. Don't believe me? Here's a slide show to prove it:

I'd like to take a moment to point out the magnificent cupcakes made for me by our dear friend Roxanne. Yes, those are Benner Bots. Yes, they are the greatest homemade cupcakes ever, in history. No, you cannot have any of your own. They're mine. Thanks, Roxanne!

All in all, it was pretty much up there with the best birthday parties I've ever had. I just want to point out to all you readers one more time that my lovely and beautiful wife is the one that made it happen for me. In fact, the best gift I got for my birthday was the love and adoration Rhianwen showered upon me for pretty much the entire week of my birthday.

And while we're at it, let's just share a story from my birthday week. Actually, my birthday day, when I was scheduled to work from 4pm to midnight. There I am, working the late shift at Trader Joe's, when suddenly a voice comes over the loudspeaker.

"MICHAEL BENNER, PLEASE COME TO THE FRONT OFFICE, NOW."

"Uh oh," I thought. "I think I'm getting detention."

When I get to the front of the store, who is standing there with a big homemade chocolate pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing? Rhianwen, that's who. She brought a cake and served it to me and all my co-workers at 11pm for my birthday. I felt so loved and special.

What a wonderfully blessed life I lead, that I get to call her wife! I guess the next 75 birthdays won't be too bad after all, as long as she's around.

A couple of Benners and a Baumann come to visit

That's right folks. Grandmom, Aunt Marge and Dad/Ray came to visit us in LA last month. Here's a slideshow of their visit, followed by some of the many highlights.

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

- The first night they came, we visited the original Bob's Big Boy in Burbank, CA, where they hold classic car shows every weekend. You'll notice Dad in the photos standing with a bright yellow Charger that he just might have stolen if he weren't with his mom at the time.

- There was an obligatory stop at Rodeo Drive, where Dad stood next to a bright yellow Ferrari. Something about bright yellow cars and that man.

- Grandmom, Marge and Dad went to a taping of the Ellen show, after which Rhianwen took them on a tour of the Warner Bros. backlot. They got to see the spots where many shows and movies were filmed, including parts of Spiderman, ER and Pee Wee's Big Adventure. That's where those photos with the statues of Bugs and Daffy happened.

- Dad and I went to see the LA Dodgers play the SF Giants. We wore Phillies gear. The Dodgers fans in right field didn't really know how to deal with us. (In related news, the Phillies beat the crap out of the Dodgers last night, 7-2. Woo!)

- All of us checked out Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the famous Hollywood cinematheque where films are premiered and stars put their hands and feet in the cement. There were many interesting celeb prints, but clearly the best ones were R2D2 and C-3PO.

- Marge got to stalk her crush, George Clooney, quite a bit. Not only did she get to see his parking spot on the WB lot, we took her to his house around the corner from us and she stood in his driveway. "Oh George," she called. "I'm here for you!" We're not sure, but we think we spotted Clooney shaking his head and shutting his window blinds from the bottom of his driveway.

- Griffith Park Observatory was on our list of stops, as it's quite a landmark. It's the site of the famous knife-fight scene from James Dean's Rebel Without A Cause, and it also offers one of the best views of Los Angeles in the entire city.

- Dad didn't seem that impressed with In 'N' Out Burger, which I just don't understand.

- Grandmom was definitely impressed with that giant donut you saw up there. The thing was huge!

- The biggest celebrity we saw the entire trip was James Cromwell. That might sound a little disappointing, but it just about made Aunt Marge's life.

Thanks so much for coming to visit us in Hollywood (Note the song we sang all week together)! We had such a great time and miss you already.

Maureen comes for a stay...

Maureen, one of Rhianwen's oldest friends, came to stay at R & B Inc. recently.

"Was there something special?" you are all asking aloud, right now. "Some sort of twist?"

Oh there was a twist, dear readers:

Just the day before she arrived, Maureen had gotten engaged to a fine fellow named Chandler! This here is the cake and champagne that we used to congratulate her. Seeing as how Maureen has a wedding to plan and Rhianwen loves planning things, you can imagine that there was all kinds of wedding talk happening, all the time, everywhere. At the beach, for instance:
And even more wedding planning at the wedding dress store, oddly enough:
Oh, and Maureen was there when Rhi saw Katie Holmes (along with Lindsay Newton!). Here's the gang, shortly after spotting Holmes on the Warner Bros. lot:
Oh, the excitement! And look at Maureen purposefully covering her mouth with her LEFT hand, so as to show off that rock. Sorry gentlemen, she's taken!

Anyways, we miss you Maureen! We know you have a wedding to plan and all, but feel free to come back and stay with us whenever you want!

Hello there!

How are you doing? Things are going well, we take it?
Life has been rather uneventful here in Rhi & Benner Land. Rhianwen is still working at Warner Brothers, where she rules at legal assisting and redlining contracts. Benner has started working at Trader Joe's, where he rules the dairy fridge and stocking eggs.
It has been getting sunnier and warmer 'round these parts as of late. Of course what we call "cold" 'round these parts is what we used to call "warm" back 'round the parts we used to live in. Seriously, if it's a degree or two colder than like 65, we're total wimps. I don't know how we ever lived in Philadelphia given that we seem to not only enjoy the warm weather, but depend on it for happiness.
Oh! Here's some news: Benner got glasses today! Over the past few years, he has had increasingly nagging difficulty when reading. It wasn't anything he couldn't easily tolerate, but some times were worse than others. A recent trip to the optometrist revealed that Benner is far-sighted, and seeing as how he is a writer and needs to be able to read and stare at a computer screen, we thought glasses would be nice.
So, Rhianwen and Benner set out to pick out some glasses. Benner wanted a very nondescript (and maybe a little nerdy) pair, but Rhianwen insisted on something a little more stylish. In the end, they settled on this nifty little pair.

Eh? Whaddya think?

In other news, our friends Roxanne and Aaron got engaged and are to be wed this fall. Hooray for them! Anything else to report? Hmm, not really...
What's going on with you guys?

Stan Fran visits Los Angeles, and all is well...

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of hosting one of Rhianwen's oldest friends in LA:

IMG_2166

CHRISTINE! WOO! Christine marks our fourth East Coast visitor out in LA (after Jen's parents, Rhi's mom and our unforgettable friend Adam), and she made the trip with her brother Tony (shown here, often referred to as To Fro) and cousin Valerie. As a bonus, Christine's cousin Dave lives in LA too, so it was one big Buglione fest!

We kicked off our time together at the Warner Brothers lot. Rhianwen met up with the Buglione crew at a taping of Ellen DeGeneres taping. Rhi was so thrilled to be hug Christine, in the flesh, in Los Angeles!

Then came Ellen. It was Rhi's first time in the studio as an audience member and she wasn't quite sure what to expect. There was a lot of clapping and dancing, and a lot of energy. There were some great laughs, particularly in the opening act where Ellen had audience members play musical chairs blind folded. No matter how many times she sees it, Rhi still thinks it's fun! The guests that day were Meredith Vierra and Olivia Wilde from "House."

After the show, Rhi gave a mini tour of where she works and they all headed out to dinner at one of the best mexican joints known to LA: Don Cuco's! We enjoyed yummy margaritas and muchso queso! And here we are enjoying ourselves:

IMG_2146

We had a slight pause in our vist as Rhi and Benner flew home to Philly to be with Benner's family in celebration of GM and GP's 50th Wedding Anniversary. Thankfully Rhi was able to book a super early flight back on Sunday to spend some more quality time with the Buglione posse. After 3 days of sleep deprivation and a 6 hour flight, Rhi was greeted by Dave and Christine with coffee in hand! We swung by Dave's to freshen up before heading to Orange County to visit the acclaimed Aunt Bobbi and Uncle Jack!

IMG_2215

It was a great day. We enjoyed the pace of hanging out, touring their "so California" backyard and garden. Notice, if you will, the firepit that Uncle Jack made himself, with his own bare hands:

IMG_2209

We even got to pick our own grapefruits from the tree. We stuffed ourselves with the delicious and filling taste of an authentic Italian dinner. We drank wine while Aunt Bobbi's fiesty dogs threatened my sense of security. LOL, no I'm serious. I'm surprised Aunt Bobbi still has all her fingers. Seeing Aunt Bobbi interact with her dogs is something you can't fully describe. You have to experience it for yourself.

IMG_2226

Oh, and Aunt Bobbi has a princess-and-the-pea bed. I rightly gave it that name, since it's the height of ten mattresses stacked on top of each other. Which is ironic because Aunt Bobbi is under five feet tall, and seeing her climb up there is like watching someone mount a horse.

That night was Oscar night, so we retired to the sofa for wine and M&M's. Hours later we emerged from the house and faced the hour long drive back to LA. Our motivation: In N Out burger! I couldn't let Christine go back to Philadelphia without tasting the magical, dilectable, satisfying scrumptuousness of an In N Out burger and fries. Also, they gave us hats.

IMG_2251

IMG_2252

IMG_2253

Which may or may not have been a good idea.

Oh Stan Fran, we miss you already and are so happy you came to visit us in the sunny LA. Lots of love and kisses!!!! Mwah!

On the Lot

Back in mid-January, Sarah came down from San Francisco for a big fancy engineering event. While she was here, Rhianwen took us on the WB lot for a nice lunch and informal tour. We stuffed ourselves with delicious Mexican food, and then walked around the lot, marveling at the movie magic happening before our very eyes.

What you don't know is that Sarah actually threw a rock at that sign, which is why it fell to the ground. She's quite the vandal.

Here, you'll see a photo snapped by Sarah of "ER" shooting a scene on WB's fake city street.

That guy in the foreground is the security guard who kept telling Sarah to not take photos. But you see, Sarah is a rebel without with a cause: she wanted to see John Stamos.

And hey, just for fun, here is George Clooney's parking space.

That's right friends, if you come visit us in LA, you too may have a chance to see the portion of concrete on which George Clooney parks his expensive automobiles. (For all we know, this is some guy named Gary Clooney, or a lady named Geraldine Clooney. But whatever.)

And now, because there is no other way to end this post, here is a photo of Rhianwen wearing my shoes.

That's all folks!

Watching the Eagles Fly, From Cali

"Mike and Rhianwen? Hey, it's Donovan! Tell you what, we're going to go
to the Super Bowl and win it for you two. What do you say to that?"

The Phillies have my love and admiration unconditionally, always. But I'll openly admit that, when it comes to the Eagles, I am the definition of a bandwagon fan. When they are winning, I am rooting for them. The second they lose, it's as if I never loved them in the first place. I can't explain the emotional underpinnings of such a reaction; I don't know why I act that way, I just do.

That doesn't mean that when they're losing, I don't watch their games. I just do it with a bad attitude. "Why is Andy Reid passing right now?" I'll complain to no one in particular (Rhianwen does not really care about my complaints). "How come Sheldon Brown doesn't hit like he used to? I hate this team, always have." Then they'll do something like put up 200 points on a good team and I'll be back on board, acting as though I never left.

All this is to say that in light of how well the Eagles have played as of late, Sunday's game against the Cardinals has me beyond excited. I am of the opinon that, as long as the Eagles play as they have recently, they shouldn't have any trouble. The Cards' defense isn't particularly intimidating and our defense has the talent to bottle them up (or at least get stops). Then it's on to the Super Bowl, hopefully against Pittsburgh and we can enjoy putting that lousy city in its place.

But that complaining spirit is still lingering, for another reason entirely. Specifically, how is that two things I've never seen in my lifetime but have been waiting for (A Phillies World Series win and an Eagles Super Bowl win) might both be happening in the very year Rhi and I move to Los Angeles?

How is this fair?

(Sidenote: We have changed the colors of the blog to green and silver, to reflect our Eagles' fandom. Nice, huh?)

Six Months in LA

As of November 3, Rhianwen and I have been in Los Angeles for exactly six months. That means we have spent approximately 1/50th of our lives here in California, because like most people we measure and judge our lives in fractions of 50.

So how has this past fiftieth of our lives held up compared to the other 49? Not bad. We've had plenty of blessings. Rhianwen and I live with our best friends in the world (each other, duh) in a terrific home in a beautiful place. Rhianwen has a job that she enjoys, and maybe more importantly she is building good relationships with her co-workers. We have found an amazing church that we seem to appreciate more and more each week. We have an ever-growing group of friends that bless us despite the fact that we sometimes don't have the means to bless them. We're geographically closer to Sarah and Steve, which is a dream Rhianwen has had ever since Sarah left Philadelphia for Berkeley more than ten years ago.

Of course, there are hardships too. I've been unemployed for going on ten months now. We never thought finding a job would be this hard (and believe me, I have applied to a lot of jobs in just about every field that doesn't require an M. or J.D.) and it is putting a particularly tough strain on our finances currently. Of course there is the occasional bout of homesickness. Rhianwen has been hit hard with it since the moment we drove away from Phil and Rachel's back in April. I mean, let's face it, when we found out Rachel is pregnant, our joy was quickly followed by a longing to be in the company of our dear friends. And then there's the Phillies World Series victory; I wait 25 long years for the thing to happen, and they wait until I skip town to do something about it. I am still sifting through my friends' Facebook photos of the days-long celebration, suppressing tears as I go.

But hey, the hardships are blessings too, because that's part of God's wacky design, right? I've been extremely close to landing a job on several occasions, only to have the door closed on me for unknown reasons. Could it be that those unknown reasons are God's ways of saying, "I don't want you spending two and a half hours a day on the 405"? And being apart from our friends and family might be tough, but our desire for community has only helped us forge tighter friendships here in LA. Sure, it will suck to be 3,000 miles away from home for Thanksgiving and Christmas but... well, actually there's no upside to that. Buy us tickets, please?

Most of all--and I think Rhianwen will agree with me here, maybe we can get a Rhi's Remark about it later--I think our marriage has been strengthened. Even though we are shakier than we have ever been financially and materially, I am more confident than ever that our relationship can survive anything.

Rhi's Rhimark: I'll just say that I am tremendously proud of Benner and the diligence and faith he has displayed these past few months. He is an amazing husband and I love him dearly. As far as these past 6 months have gone: God has never given us more than we can bear and He has used our circumstances to make us more available to Him. Through that dependence He has been drawing us closer and working in our hearts and that gives us more satisfaction that anything else. We are grateful for these past 6 months, for all of your encouragement and support, and look forward to what lies ahead.

Meet Our LA Friends.....

Benner, Roxanne and Aaron

Our friendship with Roxanne and Aaron seemed almost providential. We met them on our second full day in LA at Mosaic church in Pasadena. We were staying with Sarah and Steve at the time. We had heard about Mosaic and wanted to check it out. When we did, two very friendly people greeted us at the welcome table: Roxanne and Aaron. We had a nice conversation, and went home. But a few hours later, we were at Trader Joe's and ran into them again! (At the time, Aaron had a very massive beard so we remembered him.) Roxanne and Aaron were so down to earth, authentic and super nice. It was only natural that we became friends. Roxanne and Aaron were there for Rhi's birthday hike, but perhaps most importantly, they introduced us to our favorite LA taco spot: Hugo's.

Roxanne is a Women's Program Coordinator at a non profit on the west side dedicated to using art to help end domestic violence. From their website: "Through creative expression, battered women and children gain a sense of renewal and power." Aaron is a photographer. He just gave us his new business cards and they are a smaller, irregular shape and feature various photos that he has taken. Very hip business cards. You should hire him! They are both California natives and met at UC Santa Cruz at a concert. We enjoy engaging in political discourse with them and always end up laughing when we're with them which makes for a good time.

This past weekend we met up on Sunday afternoon for bocce ball at the park. We also did a little tree climbin' and and enjoyed some old school fun of the playground.

Coincidentally, we spotted another celeb to add to our list: Farrah Fawcett.

Good spot job Roxanne! We then walked around Studio City, had some pinkberry (which is soo west coast) and debated the proper way to fix nachos which we enjoyed as we witnessed the Phillies victory. WOO HOO!

Becca and Ryan Robins

As many of you know, Benner and I are obsessed with naming things. It seems that we are coming up with new nicknames for each other every day, and we spend hours talking about potential dog and baby names. King Beepers is tops for our future bulldog, and the baby names are a secret. (Except we've spilled to many of you already.) We somewhat consider ourselves experts in the field of nameology. You wonder how Becca and Ryan fit in to this? Well, this past Saturday night as we had the Robins over for dinner, they shared their future dog name: Baskin. Baskin Robins. That is awesome. Mike and Rhianwen first met Becca at small group at Ecclesia. The two hit it off right away and we later met her husband Ryan. Ryan is an actor (has a lead in an upcoming production called the White Rose-- he plays a nazi bad guy) and Becca is a chaplain at a homeless shelter for women and children called Hope Gardens. They are from Colorado and have been here for about a year.

For our next get together, we plan to hit a batting cage/put put golf place (if you're in LA and work in the industry you have to be good at softball) and we also want to try fly fishing together. I don't remember how that came up but we know there are many adventures in store.

Thanks for being our friends guys, we like you a lot!

Rhianwen's Birthday!!!

Rhianwen's birthday was this past weekend, July 20! Yay, she's 25 years old! Woo!

We celebrated by having Steve and Sarah over and going for a hike. We went to Fryman Canyon, which we heard was really nice, but as it turns out it was overrun with bees that day. Steve is deathly allergic to bees, so we decide to just go for a walk around our neighborhood, which was nice too!

Here's a slideshow of the day, including a house with a dinosaur on the lawn, a bookstore in an old movie theater, yummy yummy cupcakes, and some hot tub action.

Happy birthday honey! You're the greatest girl I know!

BIG KITTY CATS!!! and other notes on Sarah's birthday weekend

This past weekend was Sarah's birthday. Naturally, she wanted to spend her special day going to look at big kitty cats. We drove up to Lancaster, CA to visit her friends Carrie and Darryl, and from there it was off to the big cat sanctuary where we watched leopards eat watermelons.

I'm not sure these photos do the place justice. The only thing separating us from a vicious tiger mauling is a chain link fence and a few feet of open space. It's really insane how close you actually are to these giant killer cats. Even more insane is how cute they actually are.

That's everyone looking at one cat in particular eat a phone book. Not pictured: Carrie, who took the photo.

Also at the cat sanctuary: seemingly hundreds of peacocks, who were constantly making peacock noises.

I grew up going to the Philadelphia Zoo, back when they used to just let peacocks roam the place freely (not sure if they still do). I don't remember ever hearing them make the kinds of noises these damn birds were making. It was the most annoying, obnoxious and repetitive thing ever. It was kind of like a duck quacking, only the duck is drunk and shrill, and he's cornered you at a party to talk about this crackpot theory he has about the government, and you can't figure out a polite way to excuse yourself from the conversation. It's that annoying.

That's me getting ready to tackle a peacock while Steve documents the scenario.

Anyways, the next morning Sarah and Steve came over to our place for birthday mimosas before we went to the farmer's market around the corner from our house.

We ate delicious breakfast burritos and bought terrific fresh produce for cheap. We're beginning to think life ain't so bad out here in California.

Happy birthday Sarah!

Our Past Week

Hey there faithful blog readers! We know, we know, you've been dying to know what shenanigans the LA Benners have been up to recently. We apologize for the lack of posts, but this time of transition leaves our lives (and internet connections) rather irregular. So here's a recap of the past couple weeks:

Weekend of May 16-19:
Benner went home for his Uncle Butch's funeral, which was a rather mournful time. Uncle Butch was a very sweet and funny guy and very supportive and loving godfather/great uncle. We are missing him. Benner hung out at McShea's with the family (big surprise) and got to visit with his cousin Sean who was in town from Rhode Island. The funeral was widely attended, and they passed a microphone around for people to share some of their favorite Butch stories.

Benner talked about the first time we had Butch over for dinner after we were married. He was sure that Rhianwen would get along fine with Aunt Marge, but Uncle Butch was a different story; they didn't exactly share the same sense of humor. Half way through the meal, Butch starts in on his first fart joke and Benner freezes, thinking Rhianwen will never like Butch now. Then he looks over, and Rhi is cracking up. That's when Benner realized Butch was a one of a kind guy: even Rhianwen laughed at his fart jokes.

On Sunday, Benner went to Narberth Presbyterian and caught up with Pastor Steve for a few minutes. Afterwards, he went golfing in South Philadelphia with Adam, Alec and Jake. It started raining, but that didn't really stop them from finishing their game out (and nearly crash a couple of golf carts doing donuts on the fairways). That night, Benner spent the night at Adam and Megan's, where he played with Edan and watched Nancy Drew, which was better than he expected. Edan by the way, took his first steps last week and Benner got to see him in action.

Over on the other coast, Rhianwen was feeling somewhat daunted about her first weekend in LA alone, because Sarah and Steve were out of town too. Fortunately, it ended up being a great weekend. She went to a barbecue at Manhattan Beach and met lots of new people, and her toes touched the Pacific Ocean for the first time. Despite how hot it was that day, the water was surprisingly cold! The scenery and conversation was of utmost quality, but perhaps most interesting was watching the volleyball game; The sand was so hot that people played with their socks on.

Later, Rhi explored Pasadena, went shopping, visited a new church and, of course, applied to jobs and prepared for our move later that week. It was nice to have some time alone, but Benner and Rhi agree: it's better to be together, and seeing each other that Monday after Benner got back from Philly was a relief.

Benner's travel time wasn't particularly enjoyable, so Tuesday was spent resting up and applying for jobs. Also, we both needed to mentally prepare for the big move into our new apartment on Thursday. We thought it may be a doozy, and whoa man was it.

Thursday, May 22nd: The MOVE
Moving was a complicated endeavor. We didn't just pack up a truck and move it from one apartment to another. If you'll remember, we packed up all of our belongings into a little metal pod and had them shipped here. They've been sitting in storage in Pacoima, CA since the end of April. And in case you didn't know, when you rent an apartment in CA, it doesn't come with a fridge. So you have to buy or rent one. In the long term, it's better to buy a fridge-- you save money because the rental places will nickel and dime you--and you know you're getting a new fridge which has less complications. So we bought a fridge and had to pick it up that day too.
And we didn't have the help of our dear friends and family on the east coast, so we prayed that God would give us the grace and help we needed to get through it. And faithfully, He did.

So here's was our day:
9:00: Picked up a 17 foot uhaul and drove to Lowe's in West Hills which is the only Lowe's that had the fridge we wanted.
It was on sale, to our surprise.
We loaded the fridge, Benner fastened it tight and we drove from there to Pacoima.

11:30: When we arrived in Pacoima, ABF was surprised to see us. (Even though we had called them twice that week to confirm.) Our "relocube" was stacked and we couldn't access it. And the guy who could get it down had left town to drive a big truck somewhere. We had to wait 30 min.
for him to come back. In the meantime, we saw wild cats (Benner says they're feral, whatever that means) in the parking lot and waited.

12: We loaded our pod. Stuff had shifted in transit and some things were banged up and broken. We packed really well and strategically until the end--some stuff wasn't in boxes which was less than ideal. We then unloaded everything and had to strategically pack it onto the truck. The truck was a large space so we had to be careful of how to pack it because it would move. We saw rain clouds as we loaded. The second we closed the truck, the first raindrop fell. Thank you God.

We were in need of some fuel in the form of food. So we dropped off the Uhaul at our apartment and drove to get some In-N-Out. For the uninitiated, In-N-Out is fast food the way God intended it to be. The beef comes from local cattle, the vegetables are fresh, the potatoes are cut daily on site, the service comes with a smile and they are the greatest burgers on the planet earth (on the plus side, word is that In-N-Out employees are paid fair wages and have full benefits, which means it's a business we don't feel bad supporting). Benner in particular had been craving an In-N-Out burger since we came out to California, but held off the pleasure until the moment that he absolutely needed it.

After we finished packing up that truck, Benner needed that burger. And it was glorious.
We sat in the parking lot of the In N' Out and stuffed our faces with meat and French fries and loved life for a sweet moment.

Then it was back to moving.

Our new friend, John Unger who we had met once before heard that we needed help and just showed up. We were so happy to see him. Moving the fridge and our furniture would have been really hard just the two of us, and we were already feeling sore and weak from the first move. Plus, our apartment is not wheelchair accessible, which means we had to strap the fridge on a dolly and get it up multiple small sets of stairs. Thank God for John Unger, he made it happen. We were so grateful. John, we owe you dinner.

And for the first time since April 1, we were living in our own space. And for the first time since April 24th (minus two nights in hotels) we weren't sleeping on an airbed. Heaven.

We are thrilled with our new place. It's got more storage than any east coast apt. building can boast of. Our kitchen is new, and at night, the courtyard/pool/grill area looks like a place we'd vacation. We are thankful to Sarah and Steve and the Lozanos who took us in during our time of transition, but are thrilled to back on our own.

Interesting facts about our building:
- We are told that John Wayne's gradson lives in our building.
- We are steps from CBS Radford, the studio where the NY scenes of Seinfeld were shot. Currently CSI Miami is shot there.
- We got a notice on the Sarah Silverman film is shooting in our apartment building over the next week or so.
- We can walk to Trader Joes, we're on the LA river (which is a euphemism for the large drainage ditch that runs through the entire city-- woohoo. You would think this means we're in a bad neighborhood but we're in a great neighborhood, actually.)

Saturday, May 24th: Benner's Birthday! Ikea is like an amusement park, right? So of course Benner wanted to spend his birthday there. He was a little disappointed when he found out there was no roller coaster, but we enjoyed it anyway. It was an amusement park of furniture, and we bought some for our new apartment, including dressers and bookcases and all that fun stuff. Then we ate 50 cent hot dogs and drank Lingenberry juice, which is perhaps the best part of all when going to Ikea.

Then we went back to our apartment and spent the day trying to settle into our apartment. Benner built pieces of furniture like a man possessed, and Rhi organized, organized, organized. Finally, at the end of the night, Benner was treated to one of the best cooked meals he has ever had; Rhianwen made linguine with scallops in a white wine sauce, and it was UH-MAZING.

Seriously, best meal ever. And then she made her trademark pumpkin chocolate cake with cream cheese icing, complete with Batman candle for Benner's birthday. Our friends, Sean and Sean, came by for some cake and hung out for a while.

After they left, Benner fell asleep almost instantly. It was a long day.

And that's our past week. We miss you Philly!
