Earth, Wind, Fire and EARTHQUAKES!?

Well it's been an eventful couple of days....

It all started on Saturday when the Benners went hiking with some LA friends to the Altadena waterfall. It was a scorching hot day and the desert is of course, dry, as deserts tend to be.

A couple miles up, we saw firetrucks up in the distance....and then as we hiked further, we heard/saw a helicopter flying overhead. There was ruble and dust flying everywhere as the helicopter stopped slightly ahead of us and someone began to belay down out of the helicopter. With hair blowing and dust in our eyes, we all crouched by a boulder, hoping the ruble would avoid our heads. I felt like I was on LOST. Turned out a woman had heat stroke that day, and the fire department came to her rescue. We have some great pictures, but Benner has the camera right now with him in Yosemite. We'll post upon his return.

Speaking of Yosemite, (where Benner and Adam are camping at the moment, a days worth of hiking distance from their car), there is apparently a wild fire. That's right. About 25 homes and 27 outbuildings have burned to the ground and there are 3,500 firefighters on the scene. Oh yeah, my coworker told me after the EARTHQUAKE. Please note that upon further research, the fire has not entered the boundaries of the park. Some of the park offices lost power and some neighboring highways were temporarily shut down but that's about it. So thankfully, he is safe. But regardless, he is has good judgement and the Holy Spirit guiding him so I trust he would smell the smoke and evacuate on his own!

So back to that earthquake. I was having a friendly conversation with a coworker when she randomly uttered the word "earthquake." In my head, I thought to myself, "why is she saying earthquake when we're talking about the studio tour?" but a second later it became clear when the building started to shake and sway. Everyone froze. I'm not talking a little rocking, sway, I'm talking I felt I was on a yacht on rough waters. Now it only lasted a few seconds, but it was violent enough to shake our nerves for the next hour. We jumped to the TV and heard it was a 5.8 earthquake which is "considerable." Windows across from our building looked like plexiglass, as they fluctuated back and forth.

I learned hours later that we felt it worse than it actually was. First of all, we're on the 10th floor which absorbs the aftershock or something like that. And secondly, (and this is the real reason) our building is on "rollers." So in an earthquake, the rollers cause the building to sway back and forth--more than they would in an earthquake. Maybe my engineer sister can weigh in on this point.

I do remember her telling me when she was in college that as an engineer it was her job to make buildings like milky ways instead of butterfingers so that in an earthquake they wouldn't break. It made complete sense! She is quite the educator. She probably didn't forsee back then that she would be working like tunnels. I guess in the context of the candy anaology, she would want to engineer them more like twizzlers as oppossed to chocolate covered pretzel?

If you're interested in reading more about the earthquake:

LOS ANGELES, July 29 -- A substantial earthquake shook metropolitan Los Angeles at midday Tuesday, swaying high rises in the city's center and western sections and rattling nerves across the region.

There were no immediate reports of injuries from the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey initially said had a magnitude of 5.8 but then downgraded somewhat to 5.4. The quake struck at 11:42 a.m. (2:42 EDT) and its epicenter was 29 miles east-southeast of downtown, near the community of Chino Hills. The USGS measured the quake's probable depth at eight miles.
Media reports said the quake was felt as far south as San Diego and as far east as Las Vegas.
"It kind of started with a bang and then the rollers took over," said Jenni Palmer, 42, a legal secretary working in a high rise in Century City. "Everybody kind of took stock. Somebody looked up the magnitude. And then we all went back to work until they evacuated the building."

The quake was followed by several smaller aftershocks.
The initial damage reports were minor. The quake sent items flying off the shelves and into the aisles of a Chino Hills grocery store. Some phone service -- both on land lines and through cells -- was problematic at times, perhaps because of heavy use. An underground water main reportedly ruptured in an intersection just east of LA City College. Underground radar at Los Angeles International Airport was reportedly lost for a minute.

"Toward this area we felt it, but so far there's no damage that we know of," said Officer Kate Lopez, spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department. "We're still waiting to hear from everyone."

Thomas Heaton, a professor of engineering and seismology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said, "A 5.4 right in the middle of the metropolitan area means that it was startling to millions of people. Of those millions of people, I'm sure we'll find some isolated instances of cracked plaster or broken things." But he added, "Generally speaking, you don't expect a 5.4 to do significant damage to structures."

Schools in metro Los Angeles were evacuated, television anchors left their desk to seek shelter and the Los Angeles City Council adjourned for a quarter hour to let nerves settle.
At the council meeting, people remained calm. "Earthquake," an official announced into the microphone. "Got an earthquake."
No damage was evident at City Hall, which had been retrofitted against seismic damage at the cost of $300 million.

Rhianwen's Birthday!!!

Rhianwen's birthday was this past weekend, July 20! Yay, she's 25 years old! Woo!

We celebrated by having Steve and Sarah over and going for a hike. We went to Fryman Canyon, which we heard was really nice, but as it turns out it was overrun with bees that day. Steve is deathly allergic to bees, so we decide to just go for a walk around our neighborhood, which was nice too!

Here's a slideshow of the day, including a house with a dinosaur on the lawn, a bookstore in an old movie theater, yummy yummy cupcakes, and some hot tub action.

Happy birthday honey! You're the greatest girl I know!

Trip to Philly, Pt. 2: Friends and Family

I tend to get stressed out when I have much to do and not enough time to do it. Usually, I'd rather plan as few activities as possible because I figure if you have low expectations, it feels good when you actually accomplish something. Rhianwen, however, has a different take on the matter entirely.

So despite having a fairly packed schedule with Christine's wedding and surrounding activities as it is, we decided to pack in even more with seeing as many people as we could in a very short amount of time. Thank God Rhianwen was there to do all the effort making. (Not that I didn't want to see friends and family to begin with; I'm just lazy.)

First we have the Papas, who we stayed with for part of the trip. Though we didn't get to spend as much time with Gary and Kathy as we would have liked, we did have one fun afternoon of swimming with Nathaniel and Tucker. Here's a brief glimpse.

That big red ball caused many an injury that day. It was a great blessing and fun to hang out with the Papas, but we really didn't get enough time. You guys should just come out to LA and hang out with us for a week if you're reading this.

Later, we hung out with the Benners/Schmidts for a pool party and BBQ. Almost everyone showed up, even the beloved Aunt Marge, so Rhi and I were really happy. It was nice to see everyone, and I must say these photos makes us look downright functional! Way to go, gang!

We also went and visited the Tomosky side as well. Here we are on the porch of good ol' 9 Woodside Ave.

It was heartening to see my grandpop, who is always fighting illness of some sort, sitting on the porch playing solitaire when we arrived, just as he always did when I was a kid. Note: Not pictured is my mom, who was working but did visit with Rhi and I later that night (forgot to take pictures, unfortunately).

Rhianwen managed to cram in an early morning breakfast with Coco (the greatest little girl in the world), Seher (the great mom of said little girl), and Esfandyar (the great little newborn addition to their family). Rhianwen used to nanny Coco and they formed a special bond, so it was very important that they get to spend a little time together.

And who wouldn't want to spend a little time with a little girl as cute as that? I'd like all my imaginary future daughters to be like Coco, please.

Elsewhere, there was the Lozanos. We stayed with Phil and Rachel for a day, and it felt just like home. Probably because we lived in their home for about a month. Hanging out with them and Matt and Jenn and all their kids was fantastic. And considering it hasn't been that long since we last saw them, it's amazing to see how much the kids have grown.

What a great blessing it is to have you guys as friends. You should totally come live in LA (Phil, you can be my agent).

And finally, we got to see Adam, Megan, Edan, Jen, Rob and Aiden, two of our favorite couples. Here's a picture of Edan checking out Aiden:

And finally, here's Jen playing with the new Alcoholic Elmo doll.

That's right, parents. Now Elmo can demand of your child a drink whenever he's feeling thirsty. A phrase that wasn't captured on film: "Come on kid, Elmo's gettin' the shakes!"

Rhianwen also spent time with her mom for her birthday, going to see an IMAX movie at the Franklin Institute. I got to play basketball with Greg, who fouled the crap out of me the whole time because he's a dirty filthy cheater who can't play fair. Unfortunately, we didn't get photos of these events. Sigh. Sorry guys, we still love you! (Except you, Greg. I have bruises.)

Trip to Philly, Pt. 1: The Weddening

There are a lot of stories that Rhianwen tells me about her friend Christine. Most of them have to do with dancing in cars, wearing ski masks and making goat noises. I don't understand these stories, and I don't pretend to either. I just smile, nod, and wonder just a little who this person I married is.

Here's a fairly typical interaction, documented on our recent trip to Philly for Christine's wedding:

That was at the rehearsal dinner, and somehow felt appropriate.

Anyways, jetting home from LA to see Christine married off was of course the highest priority, what with Rhi being one of her best friends and all. Christine got her bachelor's and master's from Villanova. Her now-husband Geoff went to Nova for undergrad and is now working on a JD from the fine institution. Oh yeah, and their high school graduation was held there. So it only makes sense that they get married at Villanova, seeing as their entire life has happened there. But the chapel is so beautiful, it's kind of hard to blame 'em.

That's the happy couple practicing their happiness in front of the massive wedding party (there was, like, 43 people total). Afterward, we went to Georges for the rehearsal dinner. It was delicious, and I don't mind saying that people got a little too rowdy for the classy joint, and that's the way we like it.

Sorry for the fuzzy photos, by the way. I was using my great HD camcorder to snap photos, but I haven't exactly learned the best settings to take pictures yet. As a result, many shots came up looking fuzzy. But some came out cool, like that middle one of Rhi and Kendra where the exposure makes it look like a rap video or something.

Anyways, so a day or so later, the bride and groom were feeling all rehearsed up and decided to go through with it. Brad (Kendra from above's husband) and I were glad to see each other pull into the lot at the same time, but mostly because we were happy to see another person wearing a tux. (As it turned out, a lot of people saw "Black Tie optional" on the invitation and went with "optional.") It was a beautiful wedding scheduled for 1:30, though we all worried when the bridal party still hadn't showed up by 1:50. But the bride finally arrived, looking gorgeous and classy with her massive entourage of navy-clad bridesmaids, and they got married. Here's the couple sealing the deal with a kiss.

Afterward, we went to the Overbrook Country Club. I am not a golfer, but looking at the course made me want to mug a few rich people of their clubs and play the back nine in my penguin suit. It was that nice.

What followed was a ridiculously fun night of dinner, cocktails and dancing. Here's a smattering of photos for the morbidly curious.

And finally, because I'm biased, here's video of Rhianwen walking down the aisle as a bridesmaid.

Notice how fast she was walking? It's because of the aforementioned 43 people in the wedding party. If everyone had taken their time, we would still be there. Very beautiful though, huh?

Congratulations Christine and Geoff!

Rhianwen wanted to add a few thoughts to this particularly special blog post as well:
1) Christine was an unterrly stunning bride. Her dress was gorgeous. I especially loved the bottom part which was 8 whopping layers of delicate material with french names that I couldn't convey accurately. She blew us all away.
2) Seeing Christine walk down the aisle was of course a cinematic moment. To my surprise, I totally lost it! Geoff himself had to work hard to hold it together as they approached the altar in good stride.
3) At the reception, Mr. B performed a tear jerking rendition of a song he wrote for his baby "Blue." There wasn't a dry eye in the house of course and he was backed up with an 8 person band so it was even more moving. Seeing the love the Buglione family shares was overwhelming that day and we were honored to celebrate alongside them!
4) In true Buglione fashion we partied like it was 1999! The band was freaking awesome and we rocked out! It was also great to see old high school faces like Robin Mescher and Evan Brownand it had me craving for a real high school reunion....4 more years people.
So she is officially Christine Hill and living it up in Hawaii as we speak! Mazel Tov!

Fourth of July Fun

Oh Fourth of July, you're the best of all patriotic holidays (sorry Veteran's and Labor days). We decided to have Sarah and Steve over to swim, along with their friends Carrie and Darrell and their kids, Leelou and Dion.

Unfortunately, we didn't get any shots out at the pool or the BBQ. Woops. But here's some ACTION photos from AFTER we were done swimming!

Darrell and Steve are WATERMELON EATING TO THE EXTREME! SO EXCITING!

Dion and Leelou play the Wii while we watch TO THE MAX!

Sarah and Steve are BEING AWESOME!!!

Moving on... Everyone told us when we moved into our apartment that it would be so great on July 4th because we were so close to the CBS lot, where they shoot off the fireworks in Studio City. Well, we didn't realize quite how close it would be.

We watched the fireworks show with Sarah and Steve from outside our apartment door (Dion and Leelou needed to head home along with their parents), and they were pretty much exploding right above our heads. It was kind of great, but also smelled like gun powder. We got some pretty cool shots of exploding fireworks. Check 'em out.

Of course, it was all a little too loud for Rhianwen and Sarah.
